Notes for Basil LOWRY

Bazzel (Basil) Lowrey was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 59 F and A M in Atlanta, Ga.

In 1846, and possibly before, he was practicing medicine in Cassville, Ga.
In 1853/1854 he moved to Cherokee County, Ga and then to Cobb County (Marietta), Ga.
In Marietta, he was the editor of the weekly newspaper and also practiced medicine.

In 1858/1859 he joined the North Georgia Conference of the Methodist Church. In June 1860 he became licensed to preach in Marietta, Ga.

Basil enlisted on Augst 1, 1863 for a 6 month term in Co. E of the 7th Ga. State Guards, formed by Governor Joe Brown to guard the railroads in north Georgia. On Nov. 16, 1863 (military pass in my possession) he was granted a pass from Military Post #51 in Montgomery, Al to go to Marietta Ga by way of Macon, Ga.

Jan 5, 1865 he was granted a pass (in my possession) to Athens, Ga by order of Urgan Patillo, Capt.

In 1889 he moved to Atlanta, Ga. At the time of his death, in 1894, he lived at 491 Piedmont Avenue, Atlanta. His Funeral was held at Merritts Ave. Methodist Church and he was buried in Marietta, Ga. Cemetery near the Confederate Soldiers Cemetery off Powder Springs Road.
