Notes for Elisha LOWREY
[History of Benton, Washington, Carroll, Madison, Crawford, Franklin, and Sebastian Counties, Arkansas. Chicago: The Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1889]
Elisha was a soldier in the War of 1812
The 1860 Gordon Co, Georgia Census shows a Mary Lowrey aged 70 and born in Virginia. She is living in the household of Israel P. Bowen and Anna (Lowry) Bowen on that Census. The 1830 Franklin Co, GA Census shows Elisha Lowry, whom I believe to be Anna's father, aged 60-69. The oldest female living in the household is aged 30-39. This is probably the same Mary as the one in 1860. Since Anna's mother died in 1817, I concluded that the female 30-39 was either a daughter who had not married or a second wife for Elisha. According to "A History of Fayette Co, AL", Anna's mother had died nine days after giving birth to Anna's brother, Elisha in 1817. The book also stated that Anna raised the newborn Elisha "until he was grown". If this is true, then the 1830 Franklin Co Census would not include the 13 year-old Elisha. If the female 30-39 was the older Elisha's daughter, then it seems strange that the young Elisha's other sister, Anna would take hin out of his home and raise him. The explanation could be that a daughter, Mary was mentally retarded or a simpleton, though there is no indication of this in the 1860 Gordon Co Census. The VA place of birth is unlikely as well, since the evidence indicates that Elisha was nowhere near VA in 1790. More likely, the 30-39 female was a second wife of the older Elisha. Amos was already married and was living near Elisha. Anna was married and the young Elisha (about 13 years old) was living with her. Thus the 1830 Franklin Co Census would reflect the following:
1 m 60-69 (Elisha Lowry)
1 f 30-39 (Mary, Elisha's second wife)
2 m 20-29 (Bazzel and unknown)
1 m 10-14 (Meshach)
