"Freeporter", Freeport Sulphur Co., P.O. Box 61520, New Orleans, LA
70160, Feb. 1969, Vol. 16-No. 1, Page 7.
"PROPERTY PROFILE" (w/artist bust drawing of John N. Gum)
John N. Gum, a tall Texan, began working for Freeport in 1927 at
the age of 17. He was born in Kingsville, Texas, and attended high
school in Corpus Christi.
In 1949 Gum became an oil well operator, and since 1952 he has
been Freeport Oil Company's foreman at Bayou Choctaw.
Out of 72 wells drilled at the property 42 are producing now. Gum
keeps a watchful eye over these and keeps them operating with the help
of 12 Freeport employees and an occasional roustabout gang hired on a
contract basis.
He and his wife, Mae, reside in Plaquemine, LA. They have three
sons - all graduates of Louisiana State University. Jimmy and Johnny
Jr. who both have master's degrees, also live in Plaquemine.
Their youngest, Billy, will have to postpone trying for his
master's until he completes a tour of duty with the U.S. Navy in
Washington, D.C.
Gum's duties at Bayou Choctaw don't leave much time for the
fishing and hunting hobbies he enjoyed some years ago. But he has to
admit that every fall there is one spectator sport that has him
hooked. Since he became an LSU football fan 18 years ago. Gum has
missed only two home games.

(w/photo)A RARE OCCURENCE - Three wells within an eight-foot area - is
recorded for the photo annals of Freeport Oil Company.
From left are C. L. Lowery, Assistant field foreman; Carl Kearfoot,
superintendent of drilling and production; and Gum.

(w/photo) GUM, more than 40 years with Freeport, is Freeport Oil's
foreman at Bayou Choctaw and one of the LSU tigers' most loyal fans.

Per memories postmarked 9/10/1998 from Robert Leon Cotton, he was
visiting Perry Lowry and they went to work with Lonnie Lowry on the
graveyard shift at the Sulphur Co. in Freeport, TX and that is when he
met John Gum for the first time.
