Notes for John LOWREY

John's middle name may have been "Meshach". His great grandson, Rev, Dr Elisha Middleton Lowrey, in documents submitted to the Dawes Commission, stated that his g grandfather was named John. Three other people swore affidavits to corroborate that. However, several years earlier, in 1889, Rev Elisha stated his g grandfather was named Meshach and that he remembered hearing him preach at the age of 106. I believe the Dawes Commission documents are more reliable since the information was corroborated by others. The discrepancy in the name could be due to a skipped generation. However, since John's oldest known son (Thomas) was born about 1760, John would have to have been born no later than about 1740. Since Rev Elisha was born in 1828 and knew Meshach when he was 106 years old, even if Rev Elisha was only 4 years old when this occurred, this would put Meshach's birth at somewhere around 1726, too late to have been the father of a son born around 1740. Therefore, I suspect that John and Meshach were the same man, hence John Meshach Lowrey.
