OBITUARIES

BASIL LOWRY

 An Old Minister Gone

Rev. Basil Lowry has long been a familiar character with Methodists and others in upper Georgia, but he will be seen no more among them except in the useful life he has lived and the impress he has made.  He died at his home in Atlanta last Friday afternoon at the ripe old age of four score and two years.  He was born in Franklin County, Ga., January 12, 1812, and has lived in various counties, the latter half of his life being spent in Marietta and Atlanta. He was a faithful, true man, loyal to his church and his God, and has gone to his reward.  He was father of Rev. J.M. Lowry, of the North Georgia Conference, Mr. Joe Lowry. Mr. Geo. Lowry, Miss Mary Lowry, Mrs. Shepard, Mrs. Van Dyke and Mrs. Veal, all of Atlanta.  The funeral services were held at Merritts avenue church on Sunday last and the remains carried to Marietta for interment.

JAMES LOWRY

(Southern Christian Advocate, 1851)

Died, Aug. 1, near Cassville, Ga., James Lowry, in the 62nd year of his age. He embraced  religion in  early life and joined the M. E. Church, and spent a long and useful life in laboring in the vineyard of his blessed Master.  He was recognized as an efficient exhorter in our Church for above twenty years. The powers of his intellect were not impaired by age.  He was emphatically a holy man. There was never a stain upon his character.  He brought up a large family in fear and admonition of  the Lord ; not one of them was ever known to utter a falsehood or drink spirituous liquors. Brother Lowry's example should be followed by every member of the Church of Christ. He lived beloved and died lamented.    Jas. D. Anthony

REV. DAVID LOWERY

(Southern Christian Advocate, 1852)

The Rev. David Lowery died 30th April in Walker Co., Ga, after a short illness.  He embraced religion in 1813 in Tennessee and joined the M.E. Church.  After he had remained a consistent member of the Church about six years he took license to exhort and the next year to preach.  He travelled the circuit eight years as a supply, two in Tennessee, six in Georgia.  He was in his 66th year when he died, thirty-two of which time he was a faithful preacher of righteousness, he was a terror to evil doers in any community in which he lived, and a strong preacher, fully able to defend the doctrines of Methodism; he lived the life of a soldier, and , doubtless, died the death of a saint.  He fell at his post, he was riding the Spring Place circuit when the disease struck him, which carried him to eternity. He leaves a wife and a large family of children with many friends who mourn his loss.     W. F. Conley.
