The Story of Edmon Lowry

The following story is from an unknown source. However, it is basically identical with the versions that  Nancy Brown,  Wanda Payne and Ed Lowry have all obtained from members of their families.  All 3 of these individuals descend from Basil Lowry, son of James and Catherine (Dorsey) Lowry, so it is possible that the essential facts originally came from Basil himself. The early information is basically undocumented, however none of it has proven inconsistent with the facts. On the contrary, some of the later details have been corroborated. And if it comes from Basil, he likely was given the information first-hand by individuals that were only 1 or 2 generations removed from Edmon.

 1. EDMON LOWREY, came to America from England with his young son, James. He first settled in Delaware; from Delaware he moved to Maryland.

 2. JAMES LOWREY, son of Edmon, died in Franklin Co GA at the age of 103. His birth & death dates may be on the headstone of his grave in Franklin Co. He came from England to Delaware with his Father, Edmon, when he was a small boy.  He later moved to Maryland with his Father.  From there he moved to VA with his son WILLIAM.  He & his son moved to South Carolina, & lastly, he settled in GA with his son & grandson.

3. WILLIAM LOWREY, son of James, was born in Maryland between 1759 & early 1760.  He died in Hall Co GA when he was around 76 years old.

4. JAMES LOWREY, son of William, was born in Laurens Co SC in 1785.  He married KATHERINE DORSEY. (See Dorsey genealogy).  He died in Cass Co GA, now Bartow Co in 1851 at the age of 66.

5. BASIL LOWREY, son of James & Katherine, was born in Franklin Co GA on 12 Jan 1812. He married EMILY YARBOROUGH in Habersham Co GA on 12 Sept 1832, in a ceremony conducted by Judge Andrew Dorsey.  He died at his home on Piedmont Ave in Atlanta GA on 13 April 1894, at the age of 82.  He is buried in Marietta GA in the family plot. He was a minister of the gospel & a member of the N GA Methodist Conference. He owned & published a newspaper for many years.
